Avoid The Wait – Go Digital for N.C. Tag Renewals, Etc.

Oct 1, 2026 | 12:31 PM

In effect October 1st, no more standing in line at the tag office for a sticker or registration card.  The North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles is going digital for some services, as drivers will no longer be mailed license plate stickers or printed registration cards.  Instead, proof of registration is now all digital.  Lawmakers approved the change in the state budget passed in July – to help save time, money, and prevent fraud.  At the same time, most of the process isn’t changing, residents still need to pay fees, taxes and get their car inspected before renewing their registration. The DMV will still mail a reminder 90 days before a registration expires, and drivers can continue to renew their registration online or in person.
