Considered an important member and business leader in the High Country, Fred Pfohl passed away this past weekend. Best known as the founder and owner of General Mercantile in Beech Mountain, Pfohl was also the first Mayor of Beech Mountain. Pfohl and his wife, Marjorie, were presented with the state of North Carolina’s highest honor, The Long Leaf Pine from the Governor’s Office last July. The Pfohl’s passion for the High Country and its people and places were evident. For decades, General Mercantile has served as a spot where locals and tourists can pick-up groceries, fresh vegetables, hardware items, and even grab a country breakfast.
