BOONE, N.C. — The Watauga Pioneers are moving on! Watauga opened the NCHSAA football playoffs in impressive fashion Friday night, knocking off Olympic High School 16-8 at Jack Groce Stadium to advance to the second round of the 6A West state playoffs.
The Pioneers, the defending 6A state champions, entered the postseason as the No. 13 seed and protected their home field against the No. 20 Trojans.
In a hard-fought playoff battle, Watauga’s defense came up with the stops when it mattered most, limiting Olympic to just eight points and helping the Pioneers secure the eight-point victory.
The win continues an impressive turnaround for Watauga, which started the season 1-5 before putting together a strong finish and earning a spot in the postseason.
With the victory, the Pioneers improve to 6-5 on the season and advance to the second round of the NCHSAA 6A West playoffs.
Watauga will look to keep its championship hopes alive as the postseason continues next week as they travel to Kings Mountains!
PIONEERS WIN! WATAUGA 16, OLYMPIC 8!
